I've read tons of reviews of Julie & Julia that focus on Meryl Streep and how amazing she is. No doubt - she is amazing, as always. Some of the reviews said that her story was much more interesting or engaging or wonderful than the scenes regarding Julie Powell. To those reviewers, I say, nope.
Perhaps it is because I am a blogger who often feels like I am writing without any sort of direction or purpose, but I adored the scenes on Julie Powell. She felt so real. Her frustrations were real. That blogging can cause strife in personal relationships, very real. I strongly connected with her character. The amazing success and failures. Bravo.
Don't get me wrong, the scenes with Julia and her husband were amazing. Meryl Streep brought such joy to the screen. Even in her frustrations, there was an underlying joie de vivre that most people don't have. Or perhaps we are too jaded and don't think joie de vivre is cool anymore. Who can be sure.
Go see the movie. Unless your husband really likes duck and then expects you to cook it for him. Then, just don't take your husband. Unless you can cook duck. I can't. There's simply no way.
